Each day is a gift...some I want to return, but all of them I'm thankful for.

Which do you like better?

Conversation in our family this week:

Jordan: "Hey Matthew, which do you like better...Hobby Lobby or Chucky Cheese?" (Ironically, he LOVES Hobby Lobby so this was a tough decision for him)

Matthew: " Chuck E Cheese!"

Jon: "Which do you like better, Mom or Chuck E Cheese?" (thanks for that one...as if I have a chance)

Matthew: "Chuck E Cheese!"

Me: "Which do you like better, Mom or naptims?" (hoping to get myself a favorable response)

Matthew: "Naptime!"

Jordan: "Which do you like better, Mom or Time Out?" (that's my girl...she's giving me a fighting chance!)

Matthew: "Time Out!"

Jon: "Which do you like better, Mom or Mom?" (finally, I think I can win this one)

Matthew: (after a long pause)...."DAD!"

Not feeling the love around here.

First Day of Kindergarden

For years I've been debating where to send Jordan to school. I started feeling the panic of this decision about 1 week after we got her...right about the time she cut her first tooth. Some people may think I need therapy...I just like to think of myself as a planner. Anyway, when it comes to her eduction, I've agonized, I've prayed, I've asked advice from anyone who can breathe. After waffling around like a fish on the shore, we finally decided that we would home school for Kindergarden. Whew! Decision made. The amazing thing is once we made that decision, there has been nothing but peace, joy and excitement in our house.

This week marked the official commencement of Home School. I taught High School for many years but I've never been SOOOOO excited for a "first day". I used to have a reoccuring dream (nightmare really) that involved all the parents at back to school night where I was actually supposed to teach the first class but didn't know it until they walked in. No books, not enough desks, a room full of parents giving the look...you know the one. I would have this dream (in different variations) for about a month before the first day of school. This year, I'm happy to say I didn't have one single bad dream and so far, Jordan and I are having an absolute blast! I'm sure there will be days that are not so fun, but for now I can't imagine anything I'd rather be doing. This. Is. FUN! The night before the first day, I was actually so excited I had trouble sleeping. How crazy is that? I'm so thrilled I'm able to stay at home and do this...never thought I'd be a home school mom :-) Besides, school at home means Jordan can wear Ballet slippers all day long...I've discovered this is important to her. Can't say I've had any desire to wear ballet slippers...

Kind of a funny sidenote...check out Jordan's upper lip. Do you see the mustache? Apparently she sucked her lip as hard as she could to the top of a drink bottle. So hard that she actually gave herself a hickie...on her upper lip. I didn't even know it was possible. Note to self: If you ever find yourself sticking your upper lip into your drink bottle, don't suck too hard.

Frank and Wilbur

Today I killed the family pet. I hunted him down and deliberately killed him. I waited until the kids were down for their naps, so they don't yet know. shhhhhhhhh.

Before you judge me, you have to realize the pet situation in our house has taken a bizarre turn lately. Jordan has been listening to Charlotte's web (book on tape) over and OVER AND OVER. She has begun to see the "injustice" of killing a living thing...somewhat like little Fern when she intercedes to save Wilbur the pig. Today Jordan lobbied for Frank...our newest "pet"...who is (was) a fly. Yes, a FLY! With that in mind, wouldn't you try to kill the family pet?

The only good news is there is no shortage of Franks...she doesn't need to know how many of them I've killed!

Extreme Makover needed?

Jordan drew this lovely picture of me the other day. Notice the color of the hair. When I asked her why she chose that color she said, "it's shiny silver, just like the botton (roots) of your hair". Nice.

Face Painting Fiasco

About 2 years ago, we were at the local rodeo and they had a face painting booth. Jordan wanted to get her face painted , then didn't, then did, then didn't (decisions are a struggle)...she ended up NOT doing it and has talked about it for the past 2 years! Every time we go to someplace that has a "carnival" atmosphere, she asks if they have face painting...several have but the booths will be closed down or the line an hour long so we don't do it. I've even looked for face paint at Wal-mart and can't ever seem to find it. We're really struggling in the face-painting department here!

Today our library had a big event that included face painting. FINALLY! Jordan was beyond excited. There were only about 6 kids in line so I told Jordan we'd pick out a couple of books and go get in line. 5 miutes later there were at least 40 kids in line...ugh. Much drama and 45 minutes later, I'm sitting at the table painting faces (why not?) and Jordan is getting her face done by someone else. When she was finally done and came over she had tears in her eyes and a great little sun design on her cheek. I knew she'd been over the top excited about getting a rainbow so I asked why she changed her mind..."I didn't, I wanted a rainbow but the lady said she couldn't do one". Really? Since I already had paint in hand I remedied the situation with my amazing artistic abilities and she had pictures on both cheeks. I even added a little cloud to the bottom of the rainbow...oooooooooooooohhhh!

She loved the end result and I think face painting has lived up to everything she was hoping it would be! I know I won't always be able to solve her problems but in spite of my past face painting "failures", I felt like supermom today...just by painting a rainbow!

Alligators Everywhere

Last week we went with some friends to a local Alligator Farm. Somehow I've managed to live here for 10 years and this was my FIRST visit...hard to believe isn't it? It was a very East Texas experience and (shockingly?) a LOT of fun. I think the kids enjoyed it too :-).

They have a good size pond full of alligators varying from about 2 feet long to this monster (one closest to the bottom of the picture). It's name is Domino, its almost 17 feet long, weighs about 700 lbs and is 40 years old. One look at him and I felt WAAAYYY better about turning 40. In comparison, I'm lookin pretty good. I'm feelin slim and smooth! However, not sure that an alligator should be my mark of camparison? Anyway. We got to see a feeding time which was intersting...it involved a large bucket of chicken pieces (bone and all) and dozens of writhing reptiles. The man feeding them would pet their snouts with one hand while waving chicken parts around with the other. He was also missing a thumb. He told us Domino got it several years ago. However, he was also quick to point out a large alligator tooth he had hanging around his neck...from Domino. Guess a thumb for a tooth is considered a good exchange in the alligator business?

The suprising part of the alligator farm was that they had a wide variety and numbers of animals all over the place. It was better than many zoos I've been too. The people working there kept getting animals out of the cages for us to pet. Racoons (Matthew's favorite), baby alligators, ferrets, bizarre lizards and several variety of snakes including this lovely one...NOT Matthew's favorite. I pet everything (life on the edge...I'm a wild one), Jordan pet nothing, and Matthew would poke everything and then run.

They even had a little petting zoo type area with all kinds of tame wildlife including deer. Jordan thought this was pretty cool...although I don't think she ever touched one.

It was a hot day and Matthew discovered the mist fans. I think he'd like us to install one of these in his room.

He also found a boat that he was actually encouraged to drive...does life get any better?

I'm happy to say that I tried something new and liked it...we will definitely be going back again. If nothing else, I want to see if the man who feeds the alligators keeps all 9 fingers!

Bits of My Weekend Volume 4

Kicked off the weekend with some good friends. Cookout and swimming, what a great theme for summer!

The best way to start off any day...chocolate croissants. Thanks to my sister-in-law Lisa for the yummy recipe! This is sure to be a re-occuring breakfast in our house. Jon couldn't figure out why I gave the kids "dessert" for breakfast but really...cinnomon rolls, monkey bread, pancakes...why not chocolate croissants? The line between breakfast and dessert is a very blurry line indeed.

The kids made monster trucks at the lowe's building class. Jordan is getting pretty good with a hammer. Matthew...well, lets just say that when he picks up a hammer, you want to stand back. Way back.

We ended the weekend the way we started it...cookout and swimming. This time with Grammy and Grandad. Matthew got a boatdriving lesson. But there are no pictures since I had to hold on for dear life...letting go long enough to take a picture didn't seem prudent. He kept yelling, "FASTER! FASTER!" and making sharp turns. I'm already telling him to save for his insurance costs...they'll be high...and with good reason.
Jordan did a little fishing. This is actually the first fish she had caught totally by herself. Usually she'll hold the pole for about 1 minute and then hand it off to Jon, returning only when there's something to real in. I can relate to that type of fishing. She was quite proud of herself so were we until she got the hook stuck in Matthew's hand. oops.

Our biggest event of the weekend was the purchase of a camper. Yes, a camper. Those of you who know me well are now wondering if the chocolate croissants were laced with any illegal substances. I simply don't camp. However, for quite awhile Jon and I have been discussing what activities and precedents we want to set with the kids and camping is pretty much top of the list for a wide variety of reasons. So....Jon has gone to several auctions lately and came home with this. I am SO excited. So are the kids. We go out and explore in the camper several times a day. I know some people may not consider this "real" camping...after all, there are mattresses, running water and air conditioning involved. But, it is camping that I can totally buy into!
I can rough it for a good reason (like a mission trip) but vacation??? I don't think so.

So here's my problem, we have a camper, and I've never really camped. Clueless here. I'm looking for any advice from those of you who have BTDT (been there done that). How can I prepare so that the camping outing is the best possible experience? HELP!

Birthday Highlights and June Year's Goals

Recently I had a birthday...the big 40. Having a birthday made me very appreciative of many things such as an amazing family, fantastic husband, great friends, and the blessing of still having all my faculties...at least as far as I know I still have all my faculties? I remember as a kid thinking that 40 year olds were one foot in the grave but I figured they didn't know it because they couldn't see or hear so well. Even if they did know it, they were sure to forget quickly.

Another thing I appreciated on my birthday was Face Book. Face book has revolutionized birthdays. When in the history of the world have you been reminded to wish happy birthday to a person you haven't seen in 25 years and have no idea where they live or what their phone number is? It's fantastic! I savored each of the birthday wishes. It's even great for people like me who forget the birthday's of people I know well and see everyday. For this feature alone, face book is deserving of a Nobel prize.

I also received several fantastic birthday gifts. I always enjoy gifts (feel free to send a late one if you forgot...gifts always welcome here) but there were 4 gifts for this birthday that were particularly amazing and noteworthy.

Gift # 1 - A surprise party from Jordan. She has been telling me for almost 6 months that she was going to have a surprise party for my birthday. I tried to tell her that talking to me about it DAILY just might ruin a little of the surprise factor. She was pretty convinced that I would forget our conversations and be surprised anyway. Not sure how to take that. Maybe she has the same opinion of 40 year olds that I had as a kid? Maybe she just knows me better than I realize? Regardless, the party was great and Jordan's glee and excitement brought so much joy to my heart. I love that girl!

A few days later we had a "surprise" party for Jon. I introduced Jordan to silly string...she's a fan! But really, who isn't?

Gift # 2 - Carcassonne...this is a world domination board-type game that we learned to play with Kris and Lance while in Hawaii. A fun and competitive game that is great for 2 people. It has been a long time since there has been a game that Jon and I enjoyed playing with just the two of us...not since the time where we played backgammon every night...for 8 years. Really. When we find something we like, we stick with it. Some people may call it a rut. We choose "consistency". We now play several games of Carcassonne almost every night. We started out keeping score of the overall games won by each of us. We were writing them in the top of the game box....kind of a log of our playing history. Then I went on a bit of a loosing streak. I found myself laying in bed plotting how to out-strategize Jon the next night and getting angry at him when he'd thwart my efforts. One night I got so frustrated I threatened to burn the game (my competitive side can get a little ugly). We decided to stop keeping score. At least, we don't keep it on the box anymore...but we both know what the score really is. No matter what anyone says, winning DOES matter. Ahhhhhh...healthy marriage time together!

Gift #3 - My most bizarre gift came from my friends Jennifer and Kim. A while back we were talking about our weddings (random). I wore a family dress that I absolutely loved, but I said my only regret was that I never did the whole trying on wedding dresses thing. I always thought that looked like fun to try on all the beautiful dresses but at the time, I was too busy with other things to bother with it and after the wedding...well...who tries on wedding dresses after they're married? So they set up a surprise appointment for me to try on dresses. I may be 40 and married for almost 18 years (yikes) but I had a blast trying on all the dresses! The staff really got into with us and the entire experience was so much fun. I loved it! Now my only wedding regret is that there are so pictures documenting my hugomongous hair style at my wedding. Don't think there's anyway to fix that one.

Gift #4 - The last gift was totally unexpected and has brought tears to my eyes many, many times. Shortly before we got Jordan, I started a blog. Until my mom died, I was fairly consistent with updating it and for the past 2 years it's been a little hit and miss, but there are still so many great stories recorded there. Jon reformatted all the blogs and pictures and had them published in a book. It's 147 pages of pure joy. 5 years of our everyday lives. Priceless. Jordan and I sit down almost everyday and read a few pages. It has reminded me how important blogging is to me. I don't journal or even scrapbook (although I have all the stuff and good intentions) so a blog captures so many stories and events that I would totally forget. My blog started out being a way to pacify my mom...she was out of control when we adopted Jordan and would call 5 times a day just to see what Jordan was doing. We reached a compromise to reduce the phone calls and I would blog. Anytime she needed a Jordan fix she could get on the computer instead of picking up the phone. Now my mom is gone and my initial motivation for blogging went with her. However, I've discovered that I love blogging just for me. Even if no one but me ever reads this, I enjoy it (although I have to admit, the comments bring me great joy!). So...I'm setting a June Year's goal (kind of like New Year's...but hey, it's June) to start blogging again!

Me and Maxine

Anyone remember the cartoon character Maxine? She's old, cranky and got an attitude...I'm feeling like Maxine today. Two weeks ago I turned 40. One week ago I had a run in with the couch and broke my toe (the couch is totally at fault). This week I had an altercation with a chair and cracked a rib or two...ouch. Seriously ouch! I was hanging a hummingbird feeder outside and rather than get something stable to stand on, I chose a rocking chair. In hind site, not a great choice.

I was doing fine until the syrup from the feeder started trickling down my arm. I forgot about my precarious footing and moved a little too quickly. Next thing I knew I was on the ground with a searing pain in my gut and no ability to breathe. I assumed I just knocked the air out of myself (sadly, a familiar feeling as I do it often) and as I was gasping for air, my more immediate concern was that the concrete I was laying on was HOT...images of a frying egg came to mind...and I was the egg. Over easy. So...still gasping, I hoisted myself to a crawling position and started the eternal crawl towards the back door and shade. My hands and knees roasting with each contact on the concrete. But the best part...Jordan was right beside me. Walking next to me bent over so her head was right next to mine. She was saying, "That wasn't very smart mom. You need to be more safe. You shouldn't stand on a chair like that. You need to think through your decisions before hand so you don't get hurt. Just not safe!" Thanks for that.

Now I'm living each day on Ibuprofen but in the process I've learned that I no longer have the catlike reflexes that allow me to stand on rocking chairs without harm. I've learned I need to be wary because the furniture in our house is out to get me. Each day is an adventure in outwitting the furniture...so far I'm loosing. I've also learned that when Jordan (or Matthew) gets hurt, I need to focus on nurturing and save the lecture for later...even though my lecture is totally right on!

Bits of My Weekend Volume 3 - May 31

The weekend started out with breakfast in bed...for me! This is a first in our house and I was sure to lay the praise on thick to encourage more frequent occurances. Breakfast in bed was Jordan's idea and she was so very proud of herself

Robert and Tammy came to visit and any time they're here is great. What's better than having Grandpa around to pick on? Here you see Jordan "playing" with Grandpa...doesn't he look like he's having a great time? Can't figure out why their visits are always so short?

We also broke out the tube for the first time of the summer. Jordan had a blast and Matthew was terrified. For my family: we sang the tubing song the entire time, but I'm a little rusty on the verses. Made up my own but does anyone remember the original verses? the only one I remember is "when I get in the boat I will say, that was FUN"...of course, I remember the chorus...I've tried for years to forget it but there's no hope of that! Jordan has been walking around for 2 days now singing, "going tuuuuuubing, going tuuuuuuubing...."

Jordan got a boatdriving lesson. She took it very seriously.

After tubing and boating was fishing time. Jordan caught many of these little guys and between her newly aquired boat driving skills and fishing skills, she's considering going on the pro fishing tour. As long as she can provide for us in our old age...I'm all for it.

The best part of the weekend was just hanging out with family and enjoying our time together...of course I don't have any pictures of that...but it really was the best!

Hope you had a great holiday weekend and kickoff to your summer
